"OK, starboard means left...or was that right?"
All of the employers on the following pages offer excellent opportunities for those of you wanting to experience remote and wild areas of the country. Whether you work as a receptionist, clerical worker, food service staff member, river guide or wrangler, working in a remote location offers many benefits. On the other hand, it allows you to see beautiful parts of the country that still remain "undiscovered" to most of us. Imagine walking over the nearest ridge and seeing nothing but mountains and horses for miles. Such places will seem like they are thousands of miles from the nearest Interstate. Since most of your free time will be spent enjoying your immediate natural surroundings, we have the second major benefit to working for these adventure resorts - there is nowhere to spend your money! Thus most adventure resort employees are able to save most of the money they earn.

These companies take their customers on river rafting journeys throughout the country. While most river guide positions require experience, many companies provide a training school for their first year employees. If you do want to be a river guide, it would be to your advantage to get first aid and CPR certification at your local YMCA or Red Cross. The courses are easy and they don't take a lot of time, but that certification makes a big difference when you apply for the job. Another option is to work as a driver or base camp worker your first year. You get the benefits of being in the great outdoors and you can raft on your days off. Those workers may also become guides later in the year or in the next season. But no matter what job you choose, you are sure to have an excellent adventure!
