Getting There

Since most jobs described in this guide are in remote areas of the country, actually getting to your job requires some forethought. Here are some ideas on how to get there without going broke in the process.

The vast majority of workers simply drive to their job with friends. With two or three people splitting the cost of gas and lodging, driving can be quite economical. If you want to save even more money, consider camping some of the time in the many state parks around the country (many road maps have state parks and camping areas noted). Driving also gives you the opportunity to visit out-of-the-way places you may have always wanted to visit.

On the other hand, many workers choose to simply deduct the $300-400 of a plane ticket from their expected earnings and are done with it. There's no wear and tear on their car and they get to their job much more quickly. Many employers will even pick you up at the airport. To save money on the fare, consider getting an American Express card. They offer a special deal that gives you a cheap round-trip airline ticket to anywhere in the country as an incentive to join. Also, if you are a student, Student Advantage offers a membership program that will entitle you to a discount with US Air.

When looking for airline cheap tickets, don't forget about travel sites like Expedia, which can offer good fares. Here's a tip - the best way to get a cheap fare is to select the "flexible travel" option. When you do this, you don't give them a specific date and they will list all the fares and the window during which the fare is valid. 90% of the time, this is a much cheaper way of getting to any destination!

Another option for traveling around the country is working for an auto driveaway company. These companies act as a liaison between people who need their car transported over a long distance, and those who need to get somewhere cheaply. These companies are located all over the country, and there is probably one or two in your area. All you do is contact the company, tell them where and when you want to go, and they will (ideally) find a car for you to drive. It's that simple. Here is a list of major auto driveaway companies; you may also want to check your local yellow pages for other driveaway options.

One of the best (and most overlooked) ways to travel is by train. The seats are spacious, the views beat interstate billboards, and you can freely walk around at any time. Some travelers enjoy extended train travel so much that it almost seems like a vacation in itself, especially if they like to read. Call your local AMTRAK office for details, visit their website or call their main line at (800)872-7245. Students can save 10% with a Student Advantage membership.

Train travel tends to be cheaper than taking a plane, but more expensive than our last budget option - the bus. Not only do busses offer the rock-bottom prices, but you are virtually guaranteed to meet some very "interesting" people! Call Greyhound at (800) 872-7245.
